Flower Preservation

The vase life for most flower arrangements is between four to seven days, but this recommended time greatly varies with the type of flower and the different methods for flower preservation.

In general, to maintain flower preservation, keep flowers well hydrated with floral foam, which is what floral shops usually mix into their arrangements, or flower food mixed with lukewarm water. Lukewarm water is better than cold water (exceptions are daffodils and tulips) because it contains less oxygen. Oxygen blocks the uptake of water and stunts flower preservation.

Flowers also should be kept in cool places away from heat, which promotes dehydration and leads to dried flowers. Be sure to keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, heating or cool vents, ceiling fans, televisions and radiators.

Another interesting flower preservation tip is to keep flowers away from ripening fruit. This is because it releases tiny amounts of ethylene gas, which prematurely ages flowers. According to the Flowers & Plants Association, dying flowers release the same gas and should always be removed from the vase.

The Flowers & Plants Association also provides a list of tips for flower preservation care:

1. Make sure the vase is clean
2. Use fresh lukewarm water with added flower food
3. Strip all leaves below the water level.
4. Take at least 3 centimeters or 1 inch off all stems, making a slanted cut with a sharp knife or scissors
5. Avoid direct sunlight, heat or draughts, which can shorten flowers' lives.
6. Keep flowers away from fruit and remove faded flowers
7. Regularly refill the vase's water and add flower food in proportion

It is important to remember individual flower preservation needs. Roses are able to revive themselves from a wilted state by being submerged in water for 20 to 60 minutes. Placing tulips under a light source for an hour before arranging will keep them upright longer (they curve toward the light). The water in the vase of a Gerbera Daisy must be changed every day or two, since they are highly susceptible to bacteria.
Be sure to know what care your particular flower arrangement needs to get the best flower preservation. You spent the money on the arrangement, so preserve the flower arrangement's life, enabling you to enjoy it for the next two weeks instead of the next two days.
