Creating a small-space garden may seem like a less daunting task than developing a full garden, but this is not always the case. According to gardening experts, small-space and container gardening require a lot of attention to detail in order to maximize the available space without cluttering it.

According to Landscape America, thee main considerations when planting a small-space garden are as follows:

You must decide exactly what materials you want to use, what theme you want the garden to have (formal versus informal) and what different patterns you want to utilize. Perhaps container gardening interests you. If so, decide what types of containers you want your flowers placed in.

There are many variables to play with in container gardening; sizes and container possibilities are endless. Perhaps you have a lot of houseplants just taking up space in the house, but they are beautiful and you want to find a use for them. Plan to incorporate your misplaced houseplants into your unique small-space garden. Make sure you think long and hard about what you want to accomplish with this small-space garden. This will assure adequate organization.

2. Texture- The combined elements of your small-space container garden contribute to the feeling of the area. For example, the simple texture or size of different leaves can make a small-space garden seem cozy, larger or smaller. It is amazing what a simple selection of leaves can do!

3. Color- Color is the most obvious part of a small-space garden, and the area where a lot of creativity is possible. Stretch the boundaries and make your small-space garden pop in even the subtlest of ways.

4. Scale- The size and scale of your small-space garden is an important consideration. Keep your small-space garden consistent by maintaining continuous sizes and relationships. Instead of using tall plants to create height, use the container gardening tip mentioned above and be creative with sizes. Try placing smaller plants in taller containers.

Keep the space in mind when your small-space garden. Think about what you already have in the space and try to monopolize on that. Incorporate other materials, such as stones, shrubbery and houseplants, to enhance what is already there. Maybe you have a nice winding path to your home and you want to highlight this area.

Small-space gardens are great for aesthetic enhancements. They offer creative ways to decorate your home, porch or yard. Small-space gardens can be intimate or elegant; it depends on the mood you want to convey and the materials used in the gardening process. By using flowers and other natural materials, you can create a tiny atmosphere, an escape in your backyard, especially if you decide to create a small-space garden along the path entering your home.
